Some people really make my blood boil!
We (humans) all have diverging thoughts, opinions about the world.
That much is clear.
And yet I find myself reinforcing the need to stay away from people who aren't my people.
People who have radically different values and beliefs.
Yesterday I had a pointless conversation with someone I had recently connected with over Facebook.
(I didn't know it would be pointless until later in the discussion.)
After a bit of back and forth, it became abundantly clear that this guy was just around to create some friction.
He eventually told me, blatantly, that he didn't like performance coaches.
Which, by the way, I am totally cool with.
Freedom of expression.
Freedom of being who you are and having opinions that are fully yours.
Where I draw the line with these people is he has one way or no way attitude about how things can be accomplished.
And he pushes that view onto others.
That I won’t take.
He’s the type of person that will put people down.
Who shoots down ideas.
He mentioned that the only way I would be successful was if I followed in the footsteps of a certain Dan Pena.
So after wasting 15 minutes of my time talking to this guy I hit block/delete.
That's what you have to do.
Get the toxic ones out of your life.
But I was still curious.
I am always open to new ideas.
Always open to expanding my knowledge and ways of working.
So I did check his coach and mentor out, Dan Pena.
And boy did the image fit.
I watched two short clips from Dan Pena from his website.
This is how he wrapped up one of his videos:
I quote, "I treat everyone the same: like shit."
So why do I bring this up?
Because you're not going to get along with everyone.
You're not going to have the same opinions.
Everyone has a different view on the world and perceives it differently.
Make sure to be open and explore different perspectives.
And also be firm in cutting out any of the stuff that you feel is completely out of touch with who you are and what you believe.
Let go of the people that don't belong.
This world is big enough to find your people.
Take the time to find them, your people. It is worth it. And I couldn't be more grateful for all the awesome people in my life.
I'm interested to know, who are your types of people?
